A formal education is an invaluable asset for any individual. Consequently, many students choose to pursue a degree at a university. These institutions provide the opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of various subjects. Students who succeed in university become professionals— they help the country by creating new businesses and contributing to society. Sadly, not everyone finds university easy. In Turkey, there are three different levels of education that people can pursue. The first level is denominasyenler (literally “denomination students’). It’s a general education program that teaches students the Turkish language, math, history and geography. Higher education programs are called yüksek okullar (literally “higher education”). These programs prepare students for research positions at universities or other higher education institutions. The third level of education is Ulusal Eğitim Bakanlığı (literally “National Education General Directorate”). This program is reserved for Turkish president candidates, high-ranking politicians and military officers. On average, 80% of university graduates pursue higher education, while 20% pursue employment.

Many people drop out of university due to the rigorous coursework. For higher education, there are four stages: 1) introduction to the subject; 2) acquiring the subject’s theoretical knowledge; 3) acquiring the subject’s practical knowledge; and 4) justifying and defending one’s thoughts in a scholarly paper or thesis. These terms can be challenging to understand unless you have actually attempted to complete a course at a university level. As a result, many students find it too difficult to properly follow lectures and complete assignments. This puts them at a disadvantage when it comes time to complete their courses. In addition, most universities don’t have tutors or extra resources for struggling students. As a result, most struggling students drop out before reaching the first stage of the coursework.

Beykent University has a different approach towards helping its students succeed. They recognize that some students lack proper mental preparation for university study.
